E.O Dartey
"My ability to draw is innate," states Emmanuel Otoo Dartey, from Accra. "This ability was discovered during my primary education, when I was constantly asked by my first year teacher to draw on the black board the images of things she was going to use to demonstrate to the class. Even when I had moved on to higher grades, my skills were still needed by the teacher. She helped me discover what I was good at, and I improved on it through further studies during senior high, college, and when I obtained a Higher National Diploma (HND).

"One of the most difficult times in my life was when I had to put myself through tertiary education. I had to use the proceeds from the sales I of my paintings to be able to pay for my studies. It was very challenging starting on my own, but through hard work, determination and constant practice I have mastered this art. Looking at how far I have come, it is more fulfilling and a dream come true.

"The creation of accidental effects and brush strokes with the pallet and brush is the nicest part about my art. Working on a textured canvas is challenging, but when I complete a work on it, I feel confident about my achievement.

"I taught for a year at Aquinas Senior High School, and I have also taught several other people on a private level. Currently I am helping two people develop their artistic talent. There have been occasions where I've had to reproduce several of my paintings and in such instances, I call the assistance of other artist and supervise to ensure the exact effect is being achieved.

"The subject of my work is embedded in the most appreciated culture of the African Continent. I believe that Art, and for that matter painting, can never be taken for granted because it has great value for humanity. It provides people with both enjoyment and information.

"My dream is to be one of Africa's most celebrated artists."
