Obosomase is a small township near Aburi in Eastern Ghana. Literally, obosom ase means 'under the influence of God.' The title alludes to a fetish healer who is garbed in all the essences of his spiritual profession. Prince Amartey presents a captivating 'horror' mask, its prominent features - such as the forehead, cheeks and mouth - exemplifying the patience and artistic cunning of a master. Adorned with aluminum plates and brass accents, the beard of stringy jute fibers completes the imposing allure.
The work is treated with a light layer of china clay (kaolin) and white wood mix to provide an antique-like effect.
