Based on masks once used in initiation ceremonies related to the Kuba Kingdom, a pre-colonial kingdom in Central Africa, this wall mask represents nature spirits or Mbuti, forest dwellers. Ghanaian artisan Christopher Nyasafo carves the mask from local sese wood, then dries it for two weeks before sanding it, applying white clay and painting the contrasting facial patterns, bold ears, protruding neck details and unique bird headpiece.
