Samuel Okyere replicates the Akuaba (fertility) mask of the Akan people with impressive detail. He carves the mask by hand from sese wood and includes a doll as part of the headdress. Adorned with embossed aluminum plates and painted details, the mask is finished with clay to achieve an aged finish. According to longstanding traditions, a couple unable to conceive would bring a similar mask to the fetish priest. Once he prayed to the spirits he would return the mask to the couple to take home.
