Hand-carved from sese wood, this African wood mask is titled Maame Sankofa or 'Mother of Sankofa' by its designer, Abdul Aziz Mohamadu. Sankofa is a Twi word meaning 'reach back and get it.' The Sankofa adinkra symbol of a bird taking an egg off its back is a representation of the belief that the past should serve as a guide for planning the future. It is created on this mask using recycled glass beads.
