Long ago, an old hunter who was returning home brought an alligator to the village. The creature was alive, and because the old hunter wished it, the alligator lived there for many years at the edge of the village. The alligator was whiny and it didn't like it when the villagers would bathe in the river. The reptile became jealous, for the river was his territory. But the alligator had become so grateful to the old hunter that he made music. That old one was the father of Kuiussi, cacique of the tribe Rikô. So goes a Brazilian folktale, beautifully illustrated by Berenice.
