The Seamstresses

Brazilian artist Rui de Olivera uses charcoal to draw a stunning composition that depicts three seamstresses. He draws with an illustrative style, using the simple color palette of charcoal to convey the inner longing and sadness of his subjects. This original drawing was created to illustrate the novel Pena de Ganso (Goose Feather) by Nilma Lacerda. In this story, a young woman from Rio de Janeiro begins to teach herself to read and write, striving for a better life despite the pressures placed upon her by domestic life.
