Hairy Lion

Brave king of the jungle, this very hairy lion is accompanied by hummingbirds whispering in the lion's ears. 'We designed this alebrije as a symbol of strength and power,' confide Zeny and Reyna. After carving the copal wood alebrije, they use the tip of a maguey leaf to paint the detailed patterns that adorn the white lion sculpture. The lion's mane is crafted with maguey fibers known in Mexico with the N√°huatl term, ixtle.
