Emanating a sense of quiet power, a young bull comes to life as an African mask. Salihu Ibrahim works in sese wood to carve the powerful contours. In the Bijagos archipelago, off the coast of Guinea Bissau, such masks were once thought to be possessed by the gods. They were worn as headdresses to indicate the wearer's place in society.
