Theophilus works with local artisans who cut and carve the wood into the attractive design, before painting and polishing the mask. A gorgeous dark teal lion roars proudly on the mask's forehead, with the same color patterning the etched cheeks. The lion is a common symbol throughout African culture, representing strength, wisdom, courage and protection.
