Awudu Saaed creates his own version of the traditional Bakota reliquary guardian. This Gabonese tribe, known also as Kota, is reputed for honoring their ancestors with similar statuettes featuring a diamond shaped orifice within the neck called mbulu-ngulu. Saaed carves this sese wood mask by hand and adorns it with colorful glass beads, brass insets and expressive aluminum eyes.
